A Frozen Fairytale in Tihany: Embracing the Silence of the Hungarian Sea

by abrilll

The Morning Hustle and a Bus to the Unknown

My day started early, driven by that familiar "traveler’s guilt"—the feeling that I must be moving even when there’s no fixed schedule. After a quick breakfast of a warm sausage bread at the station, I hopped on a local bus to Tihany. I was a bit nervous about where to get off, but the kind driver made sure I didn't miss the stop. It’s these small interactions that make solo travel feel less lonely.

Tihany in Deep Winter: A Town Asleep

Tihany is famous for its stunning Abbey and panoramic views of Lake Balaton, but in January, the town was in a deep sleep. Every charming cafe and handicraft shop was closed for the season. The "Hungarian Sea" was completely frozen over, and a biting wind swept through the quiet streets.

I found myself wandering through the empty alleys, shivering in the cold because I had foolishly left my scarf at the Airbnb. The only sound was the distant melody of "Für Elise" coming from a mobile bakery truck—a surreal and whimsical moment in the middle of a deserted town. Despite the desolate vibe, the sight of ducks sliding across the frozen lake like little ice skaters was a memory I’ll never forget.

The "Hidden" Host and the Pasta Experiment

Returning to my Airbnb in Balatonfüred, I felt a strange tension. The house I thought was empty was actually occupied by the host, and the door I thought was broken actually locked perfectly! Feeling a bit awkward in the shared space, I retreated to my room to cook dinner.

I attempted to make spaghetti with local ingredients. I even added Hungarian paprika powder, hoping for a spicy kick, but the flavor was… let’s just say "unique." My stomach, shrunk by days of travel, could only handle a few bites. As I packed my bags for tomorrow’s journey to Pécs, I realized that while Airbnbs offer a glimpse into local life, I was truly looking forward to the freedom and anonymity of a hotel.

Lessons from a Winter Wanderer

Tihany in winter is beautiful in its desolation, but it’s definitely a place meant for the vibrant energy of summer. Still, standing alone on that windy hill, looking out over the endless white ice, I felt a sense of peace that only a quiet, off-season journey can provide. Tomorrow, I head to Pécs—hopefully with a bit more warmth!
